Viols-le-Fort: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Viols-le-Fort displays its history prominently in the town center: the medieval fortifications still enclose the heart of the village today. They were built at the beginning of the 15th century during the Hundred Years’ War to protect the inhabitants from raids by the Routiers.

History

Inside the fortifications, the houses preserve medieval foundations with numerous architectural details. The Porte du Fanabregol is the only entrance to the fortified complex; its three-story tower served as the main entrance to the village. Since June 19, 2023, the Tour du Fanabrégol has been protected as a historic monument. Viols-le-Fort’s historic buildings also include the Église de l’Invention-de-Saint-Étienne with its Romanesque foundations.

Archaeology

The Dolmen de la Draille dates from the Late Copper Age, around 3000 BC, and served as a communal, reusable burial site. It is considered one of the few dolmens in the département that are still preserved in good condition. The site has a long access corridor leading to the antechamber, a very low burial chamber, and a capstone weighing around six tonnes.

From the village of Viols-le-Fort, the Sentier des Drailles, which has been developed as a hiking trail, leads to the Dolmen de la Draille after which it is named.

Nature

Viols-le-Fort is part of the Natura 2000 site “gorges de l'Hérault”.
