The PDESI of Hérault supports hiking, climbing, canoeing and kayaking, paragliding, cycling and sailing as free outdoor activities. The network includes 3,200 kilometres of hiking trails and 3,580 kilometres of mountain-biking routes. Hérault has 87 kilometres of coastline as well as bodies of water used for water sports. The Larzac–Mediterranean route crosses Hérault over 250 kilometres between Millau and Cap d’Agde.

Culture and history

The Canal du Midi is a navigable waterway listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with 360 kilometres and 328 structures. Its main section extends through Hérault for 240 kilometres to the Étang de Thau near Marseillan. A 0.5-kilometre section connects the River Hérault with the round lock at Agde.

Hérault’s historical heritage includes dinosaur fossils, prehistoric caves, Roman villas, medieval abbeys, capitelles, former manufactories and wine cellars. Gellone Abbey has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage List of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France since 1998. It was founded in 804 and became an important spiritual and cultural centre of Languedoc.

The description of the Pont du Diable states that it was built in 873 and is one of the oldest medieval bridges in France. The Pont du Diable is listed as a Historic Monument, included on the UNESCO World Heritage List and part of the Grand Site de France of the Gorges de l’Hérault. Seasonal swimming, canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding are possible at the site.

Nature and water

The Étang de Thau is a saltwater lagoon connected to the Mediterranean via Sète and Marseillan; swimming is possible there. The lagoon covers 7,500 hectares, and more than 400 aquatic species have been recorded in it.

Culinary delights and regional produce

Pélardon AOP is produced in the mountainous and Mediterranean garrigue areas of Hérault. The flavours of Pélardon are influenced by the plant species that goats graze along their parcours for more than half the year. The goat grazing associated with Pélardon production helps preserve typical garrigue and Cévenol maquis landscapes and keep the vegetation open.

The area for the production and processing of Roquefort milk includes parts of Hérault. Roquefort is made from raw whole milk from Lacaune sheep and matured for at least 90 days.

The market in Bouzigues showcases products from the Thau Archipelago. Bouzigues bears the designation “site remarquable du goût” and offers oysters and mussels at establishments along the lagoon shore. Culinary tourism in Hérault includes markets, vineyards, shellfish farms and producers’ farms. Wine tourism encourages encounters with winemakers as well as visits to places where wine can be tasted and purchased.
