Culture and History

The first references to Saint-Jean-de-Cornies date back to the end of the 11th century, including one dated 1099 in Gallia Christiana. Over the centuries, the village developed around the Romanesque Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste, which dates from the 12th century. The church was rebuilt in the 19th century. It is the historic centre of the village and preserves ancient masonry as well as architecture typical of Languedoc.

The narrow, paved streets of Saint-Jean-de-Cornies pass stone houses with colourful shutters. The streets also include vaulted passageways and shady squares.

Nature and Landscape

Saint-Jean-de-Cornies is situated among vineyards, forests and garrigue. The surrounding landscape offers panoramas of hills and agricultural land typical of the region. A few Cornelian cherry trees can still be found there.

A hike from Saint-Drézéry leads to Lac de Saint-Jean-de-Cornies. As part of the same hike, the route goes around Lac de Saint-Jean-de-Cornies and along the vineyards.

Local Life

At the Saint-Jean-de-Cornies market, four vendors sell cheese, fruit and vegetables, pastries and cutlery. The SAINT-JEAN-DE-CORNIES – Centre bus stop is served by the Castelnau–Teyran–Campagne routes.
