From the 11th century onwards, Puéchabon took the form of a medieval circulade, organised around a fortified core that has since disappeared. Traces of the fortification walls built in the 12th century are still visible in the existing buildings.

Culture and history

The Romanesque Church of Saint-Sylvestre-des-Brousses is associated with the hamlet of Montcalmès. Its main construction phase dates from the 12th century; by decree of 20 July 1918, the church was designated a historic monument. The Church of Saint-Pierre gradually became the religious centre of the Puéchabon community, replacing older places of worship in the surrounding hamlets.

In the vicinity of Puéchabon is the Abbaye de Gellone, a church. In the wider regional surroundings of Puéchabon are the Abbaye du Vignogoul, a historic site, and the Carré Sainte-Anne, a museum. The closed Artothèque de Montpellier, a museum, is also located in the wider regional surroundings.

Nature

Puéchabon includes the Gorges de l’Hérault Natura 2000 area. The Gorges de l’Hérault are classified as a Grand Site de France and a Geopark because of their biotopes and geological diversity. Their cliffs are home to more than 800 plant species, as well as numerous bird and bat species.

In the vicinity of Puéchabon are the Montagne de la Sellette, a mountain, the Roc de la Vigne and the Puech Boissou, each a summit, as well as the Montagne de Labat, a mountain.

The Balcons de l'Hérault route leads to the Belvédère du Berger and offers a view of the medieval village of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert. Due to a landslide, access to the route is prohibited until further notice.
