Montpeyroux: Holiday Apartments and Houses

Above the transhumance route stands the Castellas of Montpeyroux, a fortified complex on a hilltop. A castrum is documented here as early as 999.

Anyone considering Montpeyroux as a holiday destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment.

Culture and History

A document from 1212 describes the Castellas of Montpeyroux as having a surviving crenellated wall and three gates, two of which have been walled up.

By decree of 26 February 2025, the Castellas of Montpeyroux was listed as a Monument historique.

Landscape

Montpeyroux lies at the foot of the limestone Grands Causses, at the beginning of an alluvial plain. The area's hiking trails run between vineyards and garrigue.

The Joncas is a dry gorge at the foot of Mont St-Baudille that has cut more than 60 metres into the limestone. The Joncas climbing area is located in the Grand Site de France of the Gorges de l’Hérault.

Activities

The “Randonnée du Castellas de Montpeyroux” is a 10 km moderate circular route lasting 3 hours, with 440 metres of ascent and 440 metres of descent. It is a Géorando and offers panoramic views of the “Plaine de l’Hérault” geotourism unit of the Terres d’Hérault Geopark. It also provides a view of the Castellas from above and runs along its walls.

The Joncas climbing area offers more than 70 routes of varying difficulty, from 2 to 8 and in some cases up to 9a.

Orientation

The interior of the Castellas of Montpeyroux is not open to the public for safety reasons. The hike, the walk around the walls and the viewpoint are accessible independently all year round.
