Culture

The Église Saint-Etienne was built in the Romanesque style in the 11th century and later modified, among other things, by the large pointed-arch portal and Gothic columns. It has a polygonal choir dating from the 12th century and houses a painting of Saint Jerome attributed to the circle of Caravaggio.

The Chapelle de Baillarguet was rebuilt in the 18th century on Romanesque foundations dating from the 11th century. It is maintained by an active association and is recommended for visits. The chapel offers an unobstructed view of Montferrier-sur-Lez.

The remains of the Romanesque church of Gleizasse are also called Saint Barthélémy de Baillarguet. The construction of this Romanesque church is mentioned around 1080 on a Gallo-Roman estate.

History

The Aqueduc de Montferrier-sur-Lez is 17 kilometres long; three quarters of its structure date from the 17th century.

The Aqueduc Saint-Clément is designated a fully protected historic monument and runs, among other places, through Montferrier-sur-Lez. It was approved in 1751 under the direction of Henri Pitot; Pitot supervised the construction work, and the foundation stone was laid on 13 June 1753.

The Aqueduc Saint-Clément has been preserved along its entire route and partly serves as a green promenade for pedestrians and cyclists.

The Château de Montferrier originally arose as a 12th-century castle, was destroyed during the Wars of Religion, and was later rebuilt. The terraces of the Château de Montferrier were transformed from the earthworks of the fortified complex into terraced gardens.

Landscape

From the terraces of the former château, there are views of Pic Saint-Loup, the Hortus, the foothills of the Cévennes, and the Mediterranean Sea. The terraces of the Château de Montferrier are open to the public on Wednesday and Friday afternoons from 14:00 to 17:00.

The path along the Aqueduc Saint-Clément passes through Montferrier-sur-Lez between Devézou and Chemin du Pioch de Baillos.

On 3 May 2026, AQUEDUC Montferrier held the 33rd edition of “Pinèdes du Lez” in Montferrier-sur-Lez, a mountain biking and hiking event.
