In the heart of the medieval village of Les Matelles, the new Museum of Art and Archaeology in the Maison des Consuls is intended to create a lively dialogue between archaeology and contemporary art in all its forms. Since 17 September 2003, the Maison des Consuls has officially been designated a “Musée de France”. Its vivid, educational exhibition presents the everyday life of people during the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods.
The permanent collection is based on excavations carried out by archaeologist Pierre Pannoux in the immediate vicinity of Les Matelles. It provides a comprehensive overview of the prehistory of the Garrigue north of Montpellier – from the Upper Palaeolithic to the Final Neolithic.
The historic centre has also preserved its medieval appearance. The medieval village developed through three successive expansions, each surrounded by walls. The third medieval fortification of Les Matelles was built from 1425 onwards.
The Porte du Pont-Levis belongs to the third fortification, built from 1425 onwards. It is one of only two surviving gates of the medieval fortification and retains two successive gates separated by an assommoir. The Tour-clocher is a powerful tower above the fortified gate at the end of Rue Droite. Its oldest bell bears the year 1781 and was cast by Guillaume Poutingon.
The present-day church of Les Matelles was incorporated into the town walls. It is open only during services.
Nature
The ZNIEFF “Rivières du Lirou et du Lez” also includes the municipality of Les Matelles. This area comprises the two watercourses and their riverside woodland, including around 3 kilometres of the Lirou and almost 15 kilometres of the Lez.
Active Pursuits
The “La source du Lez – Boucle Cyclo N°18” circular cycle route starts and ends in Les Matelles, is accessible year-round and runs between Les Matelles and the source of the Lez.
