Culture and History
The Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste is a Romanesque church dating from the end of the 12th century. Its single-nave structure consists of four bays spanned by a pointed barrel vault; it ends in a semicircular apse with a calotte vault. In the 13th century, the church was given a gallery with moulded rib vaulting, and a bell tower was added in the 14th century.
La Glacière is an igloo-like structure excavated in tuff and built from Castries stone. In the 18th century, it was used to store ice brought down from Mont Aigoual on mules; the first mention dates from 1729. The double ice house of La Glacière has been listed in the inventory of historic monuments since 2010.
The Via Domitia was a Roman road built in the 2nd century BC that connected Spain with Italy. In Castelnau-le-Lez, the remains of a section approximately one kilometre long are visible. This section has been protected as a monument historique since 1987 because of its historical and artistic interest.
Public Places
La Glacière houses the Maison de la Ville Durable, de la Biodiversité et des Patrimoines, a venue for exhibitions and resources. Le Kiasma offers an interdisciplinary artistic programme for a family audience.
Parks and Paths
Monplaisir Park has existed for about a century. Its trees include plane trees, oaks and poplars; it also features a cascade, a children's play area and seating. Admission is free.
Grand Parc Laporte provides access to a forest, a forest-themed puzzle trail designed by the ONF, and a play area with a boules court, children's playground, table tennis tables, an adventure area with a zip line, and picnic facilities.
A circular walk of approximately 1.5 hours leads through the streets and to the notable buildings of Castelnau-le-Lez. Along the way, it presents the town's origins and history from the Middle Ages to the 19th century.
Transport
Castelnau-le-Lez has been served by tram line 2 since 2006 and has eight stations.
