History

The oldest written documents concerning Saint-Benoît-sur-Seine date from around the year 1000. In 1075, the Bishop of Troyes confirmed the donation of two churches in his diocese to the Fleury-sur-Loire Abbey.

Excavations at La Perrière uncovered circular and rectangular enclosures, some of which served as burial sites. Graves and objects made of bronze, iron, glass and, occasionally, gold were also discovered there. The same excavations uncovered 41 Celtic burials dating from the last five centuries BC.

Culture

The Church of Saint-Benoît preserves furnishings classified as historic monuments. These include a 16th-century limestone statue of Saint Benedict, a 17th-century oak sculpture of Saint Anne, as well as a painted and gilded oak tabernacle and an altarpiece from the 17th century. Le Corps de Garde is also listed as a cultural heritage element in the municipal presentation of the heritage of Saint-Benoît-sur-Seine.

The Hugues de Payns Museum is located near Saint-Benoît-sur-Seine. The surrounding area also includes the Musée Saint-Loup, the Abbaye Notre-Dame des Prés-lés-Troyes and the Église Saint-Martin-ès-Vignes.
