Nature and water

Nearby, the Parc naturel régional de la Forêt d’Orient offers more than 300 kilometres of hiking trails. The park also contains the accessible Palais du roi Chêne educational trail. The Forêt d’Orient National Nature Reserve covers 1,560 hectares of lake areas and wet forests. It serves birds as a resting place during migration and as a wintering area.

In the Forêt d’Orient lake district, which is included in visitor routes through Aube, canoeing and kayaking are permitted during navigation hours on Lac d’Orient and Lac Amance. Access is via slipways and beaches outside protected areas. Stand-up paddling is prohibited on Lac du Temple and Lac Amance; on Lac d’Orient, it is permitted outside the national nature reserve.

The Voie verte des grands lacs Seine et Aube connects Troyes with the lakes of the Forêt d’Orient and allows a complete cycling loop around Lac d’Orient. Another 150-kilometre cycle route follows the Seine; three quarters of this route run on dedicated, traffic-free paths.

Culture and history

The Route du Vitrail leads to 70 stained-glass sites in Aube and Haute-Marne. It provides historical, tourist and practical information for planning visits. The route map indicates the access arrangements for each listed building.

The former Cistercian Clairvaux Abbey was converted into a prison in the 19th century under Napoleon. Clairvaux Abbey offers guided tours throughout the year. In Troyes, the cathedral preserves 1,500 square metres of stained-glass heritage.

The Route Touristique du Champagne is a signposted, 220-kilometre tourist route through the Côte des Bar landscape. It passes through around thirty villages connected with Aube’s heritage. The Musée du Cristal de Bayel is located on the site of a former royal crystal manufactory and presents permanent ecomuseum exhibitions. The former family home and studio of Auguste Renoir in Essoyes is open to the public.

Cuisine

Chaource is an AOP soft cheese with a white rind made from whole cow’s milk. The production, processing and maturation of Chaource take place in a designated area of the Champagne Humide around Aube and Yonne.

Cycling and trails

The four-day “L’Aube à vélo” cycle route runs from Nogent-sur-Seine to Vendeuvre-sur-Barse and passes through Troyes and the lakes of the Forêt d’Orient. In addition, Aube has 24 cycling circuits on minor roads. They are between 33 and 85 kilometres long and cover a combined total of 1,474 kilometres.

Troyes is located on the TER Grand Est Paris–Mulhouse railway line; the journey from Paris to Troyes takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes.
