The Église paroissiale Saint-André houses the statue “Saint évêque et donatrice”, a polychrome limestone sculpture from the 16th century that was classified as a protected object on 4 April 1966. The Église Saint-André was rebuilt from east to west in the first half of the 16th century; the church and its stained-glass windows have been classified as historic monuments since 1840.

The cultural offering also includes Espace Gérard Philipe / La Grange, a concert and events venue in Saint-André-les-Vergers. Part of the entrance portal, part of the surrounding wall and the dovecote of Montier La Celle Abbey have survived. The Benedictine abbey was founded in the 7th century by Abbot Frobert of Troyes.

Nature

The local “piste verte” is a 9.5 km jogging route through the wooded areas of Île Germaine, Le Foirail and Fontaine Saint-Martin; there are two circular routes. Three important green spaces are publicly accessible on the edge of the town: Île Germaine, Bert Cortins with the Bassin des Roises, and Fontaine Saint-Martin.

The educational garden at Square David Ben Gourion includes a permaculture vegetable garden, a pond, insect hotels, a hedgehog shelter, grapevines and fruit trees. Le jardin de l’église is designed according to the medieval tradition of the paradise garden and has a cross-shaped path with a fountain in the centre. It also includes a herb garden with edible and medicinal plants such as thyme, chives, savory, rosemary and bay laurel, as well as a “garden of time” made up of twelve successive planting strips that bloom month by month.

The Vallée des Viennes is home to a diverse range of animal and plant life that attracts walkers.

History

Saint-André-les-Vergers has a horticultural tradition involving the cultivation of fruit, vegetables and produce from its orchards. In 1559, the inhabitants were granted the right to offer vegetables for sale at the market in Troyes.

Saint-André-les-Vergers is located near the bypass, less than 10 km from exits 20 and 21 of the A5 motorway when travelling from Paris.
