Culture
The Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption Church features construction phases from the 12th and 16th centuries and has been classified as a historic monument since 1840. The Benedictine Abbey of Montiéramey was founded in 837 on both sides of the Barse; its church was completed in 1240.
Exploring
The signposted Circuit de la Barse starts at Montiéramey Town Hall, is 8.3 kilometres long and takes around two hours. It also has a signposted extension of 3.7 kilometres. The route passes through the orchards of Montiéramey and along a viewpoint between apple trees. On the way back to Montiéramey, it runs through the bocage landscape and over bridges past the architecture of the former abbey.
The heritage quiz in Montiéramey starts in front of the town hall. It invites visitors to discover the church and the remains of the abbey along the numerous paths through the orchards.
Landscape
The typical orchards of Montiéramey consist mainly of apple trees and some vines. There are various paths in the town where viewpoints can be discovered. Côte aux Chats offers pleasant views of Lac d’Orient.
History
The Moulin de l’Abbaye de Montieramey was built west of the abbey grounds on the Barse. Its original main function was grinding grain. On the occasion of the Heritage of Country and Mills Day, the Moulin de l’Abbaye de Montieramey opened its doors to visitors.
The former Montiéramey railway station still stands in the east of the town and is an example of rural railway station architecture.
Getting There
Montiéramey can be reached via the D619 and D43 and is 12 minutes from Junction 23 Thennelières of the A26, which connects Calais with Troyes.
