Culture and History

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Étrelles-sur-Aube dates back to the 12th century. Its east window dates from the 16th century. The stained-glass windows are incomplete, restored, and partly assembled from reused pieces. One of the windows depicts the Meeting at the Golden Gate and is also incomplete.

The history of the village also extends beyond the church. The area of Étrelles-sur-Aube was under the rule of Plancy. At the end of the 18th century, there were fourteen occupations connected with the hosiery trade here. The parish had a parish priory that was under the deanery of Arcis; the parish priory of Étrelles-sur-Aube was also under the Abbey of Chantemerle. A papal bull from 1165 mentions “apud Straellas” as property of the Abbey of Chantemerle.

Another historical event is recorded for February 1652: at that time, 1,200 horsemen passed through Étrelles and committed extensive thefts.
