Culture and History
The Château de Chitry-les-Mines was built on a former Gallo-Roman estate and dates from the 17th and 19th centuries. Parts of the château were listed as a Historic Monument in 1942 and classified and listed as a Historic Monument in 1987. The west wing houses the Galerie des Sibylles, a series of fourteen paintings from the 17th century.
A walk through Chitry-les-Mines and Chaumot leads to Jules Renard’s family home in Chitry-les-Mines, where the stories of “Poil de carotte” and “La Gloriette” are set. The house is privately owned and cannot be visited, but remains visible from the path. In the centre of Chitry-les-Mines stands a memorial dedicated to Jules Renard. The village cemetery contains the Renard family grave, designed in the shape of an open book.

The port complex of Chitry-les-Mines consists of two basins. The Port de plaisance de Chitry-les-Mines and the Chaumot water station are located on the Canal du Nivernais.
The Jules Renard circular trail in Chitry-les-Mines is signposted and maintained by the local association. The literary sites associated with Jules Renard can be reached via a cycle route along the towpath of the Canal du Nivernais.
