Nièvre: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Nièvre can then continue their accommodation search. Nièvre is presented through four destination areas: the Loire, Puisaye, the Canal du Nivernais and the Parc Naturel Régional du Morvan. The landscapes are described as forests, meadows, lakes and rivers. There are also 28 Espaces Naturels Sensibles, 19 of which are open to the public.
Landscape and Water
The Réserve Naturelle du Val de Loire encompasses alluvial forest, dry grassland and side channels. It covers 1,454 hectares and extends across the departments of Cher and Nièvre. The Pavillon du Milieu de Loire is an environmental education centre offering activities relating to the Loire and its natural habitats. The Sentier du Passeur au Bec d’Allier is a nature trail near Gimouille.
The Bec d’Allier is a confluence accessible from the Pont-canal du Guétin via the Canal latéral à la Loire. The Pont-canal du Guétin has 18 arches and carries boats over the Canal latéral à la Loire.
Culture and History
The Bibracte Museum presents the history of the Gallic capital and current archaeological research. The Musée de la Mine in La Machine is located in the former administrative building of the Houillères and traces the history of coal and the lives of miners. The Musée du Grès presents temporary exhibitions and offers demonstrations on the potter’s wheel, guided tours and educational workshops.
The Cité du Mot is a public institution. It promotes the priory of La Charité and La Charité-sur-Loire as a City of Art and History through a cultural project focused on words. La Charité-sur-Loire developed its identity as a book town through the arrival of booksellers and art-book dealers.
The priory of La Charité is open year-round with free admission. The Notre-Dame church and the Jardin des Bénédictins are also open year-round with free admission.
Cycle Paths and Trails
The Canal du Nivernais is dedicated to pleasure boating and can be navigated for a day, a weekend or a week without a licence. It preserves the Voûtes de la Collancelle, a sequence of three tunnels. A 760-metre-long tunnel runs beneath dense vegetation as part of the Canal du Nivernais.
Along the Canal du Nivernais, in addition to cycling and boating, there are circular hiking trails, stand-up paddleboarding, pedal boating and donkey rides. The cycling stage through the Bazois runs through forests and bocage landscapes with châteaux and Romanesque churches. The stage between Chitry-les-Mines and Clamecy is a continuous greenway, except for the road connection to Corbigny.
Regional Cuisine
Nièvre has five vineyards. The local culinary offering includes wines, cheese, pastries, honey, Charolais beef and confectionery such as Négus, Pavé de la Route Bleue and nougatine de Nevers.
