Culture and history
The Church of Saint-Potentien in Châtel-Censoir was founded in the 11th century by the lords of Montréal. After fires in 1448 and 1470, it was partially rebuilt in the 16th century. The church has an 11th-century crypt and choir, possibly from the 13th century, as well as a nave with four bays from the 16th century.
The upper town of Châtel-Censoir contains residential buildings from the 16th to the 18th century, which were often remodelled. From the mid-16th century onwards, the lower town was associated with timber rafters, the “compagnons de rivière” (“river companions”). The main construction phase of Lock 58, called Magny, on the Canal du Nivernais in Châtel-Censoir dates from the 19th century.
