Culture and history

The Basilica of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine in Vézelay is a masterpiece of Burgundian Romanesque art and architecture. Vézelay became an important pilgrimage site after it was believed that the church housed the relics of Saint Mary Magdalene. This pilgrimage was connected to a route leading to Santiago de Compostela. The Vézelay site extends beyond the hill across fields, meadows and forests. In the Vézelien area, visitors will find Romanesque churches, castles, fortified towns, calvaries and former pilgrimage routes.

Château de Maulnes is a Renaissance château built between 1566 and 1572 or 1573 on a pentagonal floor plan around a stairwell. It has been classified as a historic monument since 11 July 1942. Self-guided, puzzle-based and guided tours, as well as activities, are offered.

A walk along the fortifications of Noyers-sur-Serein reveals 19 defensive towers, some of which are partially visible or preserved. The Notre-Dame Church in Noyers-sur-Serein was built between 1491 and 1515. In the Grande Grotte of Arcy-sur-Cure, traces of mammoths, ibex and children's handprints can be seen. Saint-Étienne Cathedral in Sens is described as the first and mother church of Gothic cathedrals. The crypts associated with Saint-Germain contain well-preserved Carolingian murals.
