Arthonnay: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Culture and History

The ensemble consisting of the town hall washhouse and windmill in Arthonnay was listed as a historic monument by decree of 5 March 2003. The Arthonnay windmill is one of the last three surviving Auguste Bollée windmills with a guyed mast in the Yonne département. Until 1939, it supplied the washhouse with water.

The Church of Saint Valentine in Arthonnay is now a ruin; after several fires, parts of it collapsed at various points from the beginning of the 20th century onwards. Its remains are designed in the Renaissance style. As part of the 2024 heritage programme, the church could only be viewed from the road because of the existing danger.

The parish chapel of Arthonnay, at the intersection of Grande Rue and Rue du Centre, contains memorial plaques commemorating the fighting of 16 and 17 June 1940. The name “LAURENT Iassens” appears on the plaques; this apparently refers to the Belgian soldier Laurent Félix Joseph JANSSENS, who died in Arthonnay, in the Yonne département, on 17 June 1940.

The washhouse in Arthonnay town hall was exceptionally opened to the public on the occasion of the European Heritage Days.
