Saint-Péreuse is a village situated on a ridge overlooking the Veynon Valley. The village lies on the boundary between the granite soils of the Morvan and the clay-limestone foothills of the Bazois. The municipality also includes the Saulières Forest.
Those who combine Saint-Péreuse’s cultural and hiking destinations when planning their trip can rent a holiday apartment for this purpose.
Culture and history
The Château de Saulières was built around 1786 in the neoclassical style of the late 18th century and represents the spirit of Neopalladianism. The château is partially protected as a historic monument. Its grounds are laid out in successive terraces, extending from the stables to the open-air theatre; they include a French garden, an orangery and a 19th-century chapel.
The church of Saint-Péreuse is designed in the neo-Romanesque style and was partially rebuilt using granite in 1868. The choir and apse from the 12th century have survived from the original church. The Château de Besne was built in the second half of the 15th century on the ruins of an older 13th-century building and retains a medieval appearance through its four round towers. It remains in the possession of the family who live there; the owner can be contacted for information about visits.
Local crafts
Frédéric Grobost took over the family business and settled in Saint-Péreuse in 1992 to pursue it. At Biscuiterie Grobost, some production steps that are crucial to the biscuits’ flavour and texture are still carried out by hand.
Hiking
The circular hike “Boucle du Château de Saulières et de l'Étang de l'Île” passes by the Toureau de Remondot, through the Saulières Forest and close to the Étang de l'Île. It ends with a path around the Château de Saulières and its chapel. The easy hike is 8.02 km long and takes an average of 2 hours and 25 minutes.
The starting point and parking area for the circular hike are located on the D978, the road to Château-Chinon, by a rest area.
