Montenoison is associated with the Butte de Montenoison, a 417-metre-high natural hill that is visible from several dozen kilometres away. Its summit area has been protected as a classified natural site since 31 May 1937. From the summit, there is an almost 360-degree panoramic view over part of the Nièvre département.

Culture and History
The Butte de Montenoison is home to castle ruins that have been protected under the supplementary inventory of historic monuments since 12 October 1929. The protected perimeter extends for 500 metres. The former castle complex of Montenoison had extensive curtain walls with almost fifty towers. The surviving castle ruins include a pointed arch vault and the remains of two chamfered towers.
The religious buildings also bear witness to different periods. The Church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption was built next to the former castle in the 12th century and is mentioned in 1121. After a severe hurricane destroyed large parts of the building in 1851, the church was restored in 1855. Access is through a Romanesque portal from the 12th century, which was modified in the 16th century.
The Saint-Jean-Baptiste Chapel stands in the centre of Montenoison below a path leading to the Butte de Montenoison. It was consecrated on 3 November 1929.
Paths and Orientation
A GPX track is available for the La butte de Montenoison hiking route. At the top of the castle hill is a calvary, accessible via several steps; a statue of the Virgin Mary stands along the visitor path. A car park and an access road are also designated on the Butte de Montenoison.
