Nature

The Sentier du Passeur discovery trail starts at a car park at the entrance to the port of Gimouille and follows the path along the port. It initially runs along the canal and then along the Allier and Loire rivers. The longer loop is 8 km long, easy, and takes around three hours. There is also a short 1.5 km loop, which takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes as a there-and-back route. The Sentier du Passeur features educational markers and is considered a family-friendly cycling tour.

Culture

The Château du Marais is listed as a historic monument. The park of the Château de Fertot was designed by Count Choulot de Lavenne and preserves clearings, wooded areas, a canal, ponds lined with stone, a kitchen garden, an orangery, and a greenhouse. Including the swan house located within it, the park was listed as a historic monument by decree of 18 July 2008.

History

A steam crane secured to the quay is still preserved in the port of Gimouille. It has a lifting capacity of 10 tonnes, is approximately 7 metres high, and was used to transfer goods between the canal and the railway. In 1868, the port of Gimouille was connected to Saincaize railway station on the Paris–Lyon line. The port has a 400-metre-long quay, where visible remains of former railway tracks have been preserved. The Tunnel de Sampanges was built in Gimouille in the mid-19th century.
