The Gallo-Roman theatre of Les Bardiaux proves that Arleuf was already inhabited in Gallo-Roman antiquity. The rural Gallo-Roman theatre is located in Arleuf near Champ de Bois and Les Bardiaux and has been classified as a historic monument since 8 December 1975.
Anyone planning a stay in Arleuf will want to rent a holiday apartment.
Culture and history
The documented construction phases of the theatre date from the 2nd and 4th centuries.
The former Tacot railway line runs through Arleuf and is lined with small railway stations and abandoned structures.
During the First World War, German prisoners of war were employed in the Blandins quarry. Around 200 men worked in the camp, breaking up stones that were subsequently transported to Autun by the Tacot railway. The site, known as Camp des Insoumis, Camp des Bagnards or Bagne d'Arleuf, operated from 1914 to 1923.
Following the fire of 1474 and its subsequent reconstruction at another location using its stones, only about one third of the Château de La Tournelle remains. Visits to the Château de La Tournelle have not been confirmed.
The Fontaine St Pierre is a masonry fountain with two basins, one of which is fitted out as a washhouse. It can be reached and visited by car via a municipal road.
Nature and trails
The small Étang de Préperny is considered a natural area because of its exceptional biodiversity in the forests of the mountainous Haut Morvan. Information panels along the Étang de Préperny trail provide knowledge about the site's natural heritage and invite visitors to observe and explore it. A marked trail leads from the Étang de Préperny along the peat bog and over the dam around the pond.
A 70-kilometre gravel route starts in Arleuf and leads to Haut-Folin, the highest point in Burgundy, as well as to Mont Beuvray with the archaeological site of Bibracte, the former Gallic capital. The discovery route on Haut-Folin includes three mountain-bike descents from the summit.
