Culture and History
After the de Courcy family bought Taussat in 1830, they shaped the town into a seaside resort and tourist destination. The first houses were built from 1838 onwards; the opening of the roads in 1860 and the railway in 1884 boosted the town’s development.
Bordeaux merchants and prominent citizens had magnificent villas built on the shore of the Bassin d’Arcachon, known as “Les belles de Taussat”. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec stayed at Villa Bagatelle for two months every year from 1895 until his death in 1901.
The Vieux port de Taussat was dug out by hand in 1855 and inaugurated in 1878.
Paths and Museum
The coastal path begins at the Port de Fontainevieille and passes by the Vieux port de Taussat. The historic villa route runs from the Port de Fontainevieille along the beach and back to the Vieux port de Taussat.
The Écomusée Gardarem is open year-round on Saturdays and Sundays.
Water Sports and Harbour
The Taussat-Cassy Nautical Club offers sailing lessons to children aged six and over and adults. The programme includes Optimist sailing, windsurfing, catamaran sailing, 420 and RS Féva dinghies, and team boats. During the summer season, the club rents out stand-up paddleboards, catamarans and dinghies. Depending on the tides, the Taussat-Cassy Nautical Club also offers day trips around the bird islands.
The Port de Taussat is a drying harbour with 55 berths; the depth varies from 1 to 1.80 metres depending on the tides.
