Landscape and nature

At the entrance to the Arcachon Bay lies the Banc d’Arguin, a sandbank that changes with the tides and has been protected as a nature reserve since 1972. There, visitors can watch oyster farmers working in their oyster beds and observe migratory birds.

The Grand Site de la Dune du Pilat offers nature walks and activities focusing on the dune’s habitats and biodiversity. Swimming and surfing are possible on Gironde’s Atlantic beaches.

The Gironde section of the GR 6 connects Sainte-Foy-la-Grande with the Arcachon Bay over 245 km; the Bastides et Abbayes hiking route runs for 98 km between the Garonne and Dordogne.

For cycling, there are 390 km of separate departmental cycle paths and 170 km of signposted departmental cycling routes. Multi-day river cruises take place on the Garonne, Dordogne and Gironde estuary and can combine visits on foot or by bicycle.

Culture and history

The heritage ensemble of Saint-Émilion includes the hermitage or grotto, the monolithic church, medieval monastic catacombs, and the collegiate church with cloister. Bordeaux, Port de la Lune, is an exceptional historic urban and architectural ensemble created during the Enlightenment.

More than 1,000 historic monuments are listed in Gironde. Along Bordeaux’s wine-country routes are eight fortified medieval bastides. These bastides can be explored by boat, on foot or by bicycle.

Entre-deux-Mers lies between the Garonne and Dordogne and combines hills, rivers, oak forests, vineyards and a diverse cultural heritage. The jurisdiction of Saint-Émilion covers 7,847 hectares in Gironde, with a partly wooded plateau, slopes, valleys and a plain.

Food and wine

For wine-related travel, Gironde has six wine routes. Wine tourism around Bordeaux includes cellar visits, discovering cooperage, vineyard banquets, treasure hunts and cycling through vineyards.

Médoc oysters mature for three to six months on small rafts in canals beside the Gironde estuary.
