History

The last remains of Sallebœuf’s former Romanesque parish church have been preserved on Place Carnot. Archaeological excavations at this site uncovered a necropolis dating from the 7th to 8th century with nine sarcophagi.

Château Pey La Tour is located on one of the highest points in the municipality of Sallebœuf. At the end of the 13th century, it belonged to Bertrand de Got, the Archbishop of Bordeaux, who later became pope under the name Clement V. Excavations at the remaining ruins uncovered weapons and horse tack of English origin from the 14th century.

The Moulin de Bon Ange had been known since the 16th century and was the most important mill operation of the lords of Romaningue and Larsan. In 1848, it was equipped with a vertical water wheel that powered a pair of millstones.

Culture

The Église Sainte-Marie was inaugurated in 1866 in the Gothic Revival style with rib vaults and has an unusual north-south orientation. It has four gilded bronze chandeliers decorated with crystal pendants. Gustave Eiffel purchased the chandeliers, and his son Édouard Eiffel donated them to the municipality on the occasion of his daughter’s wedding.

Wine and architecture

The plans for the wine cellar of Château Lafite Monteil were drawn by Gustave Eiffel himself. The original wine cellar can still be visited and has preserved its original architecture. The estate covers 80 hectares, including 40 hectares of planted vineyards in Sallebœuf.
