Saint-Maixant combines significant cultural heritage with the wine landscapes along the Garonne. The Domaine de Malagar is particularly influential: François Mauriac inherited the estate in 1927, and it is now classified as a historic monument.
Culture
At the Domaine de Malagar, an enhanced guided tour offers insights into the ground floor of François Mauriac’s house, complemented by audio, video and photographic documents. The Chai du Rouge also features an exhibition with tactile terminals and documents on the writer’s life, work and era.
The Église Saint-Maixant also dates far back: it was built in the 12th century. Its apse and choir were classified as historic monuments in 1925. Inside, the church houses a stone statue of the Virgin and Child.

Landscape
From Malagar, there is a 180-degree panorama over the Garonne Valley, the Landes forest and the renowned vineyards of the southern Gironde region. Around Saint-Maixant, the Boucle du calvaire – Verdelais trail passes through a wine-growing area and the flood-prone Palus wetlands along the Garonne.
A distinctive structure in the landscape is the Viaduc de Saint Macaire ou de Saint Maixant. With its 32 monumental natural-stone arches, it spans the Garonne floodplain and also forms the boundary between the municipalities of Saint-Maixant and Saint-Macaire.
Wine-growing
Saint-Maixant has AOC-designated areas for Bordeaux, Première côtes de Bordeaux and Cadillac.
Getting around
Saint-Maixant and Verdelais can be reached by bus route 481. For cyclists, the Boucle vélo n°08 Côteaux de Saint-Macaire passes through Saint-Maixant via Rue du Portail Rouge.
