Saint-Ferme: Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Abbey of Saint-Ferme houses a museum about monastic life and is one of the largest Benedictine complexes in Aquitaine. Those who choose Saint-Ferme as a destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment.

Culture

The former Benedictine church in Saint-Ferme is a Romanesque church adjoining the abbey buildings. It has a Latin-cross floor plan, a single-nave layout, and three apses. The windows of the transept and apses feature capitals decorated with figural sculptures.

The buildings of the former abbey are arranged around a paved courtyard located on the site of the destroyed cloister. Since 1886, the abbey church of Saint-Ferme has been classified as a Monument historique; it preserves important monumental evidence from the mid-12th century.

In the former abbey, a spiral staircase in a small tower leads to the second floor. Every year, a living nativity scene is held in the abbey church.

Nature

Saint-Ferme stretches along the edge of Entre-deux-Mers across elevated plateaus cut through by the valleys of the Doulens, Gouraude, Gageante, and Lane streams.

Trails

The Way of Saint James via the Via Lemovicensis passes through Saint-Ferme and is marked in blue. In Saint-Ferme, the Haut Entre-deux-Mers regional hiking trail follows sections of the Way of Saint James.

“Les Pistes de Robin” is aimed at children aged 4 to 11 and their families. Pilgrims can stay at the municipal pilgrims’ hostel in Saint-Ferme, which is run by volunteers from a Saint James association.
