History
The Musée archéologique et historique du canton de Saint-Ciers-sur-Gironde presents the regional history from the Palaeolithic to the Roman and Gallic periods through objects found in the canton. The “Saint-Ciers Autrefois” museum depicts everyday life and the various occupations of the region from the late 19th to the mid-20th century. It is open from 14:30 to 18:00 on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons from 15 June to 15 September, as well as year-round by appointment. The private “La vigne et le vin” collection displays numerous objects and documents relating to various aspects of viticulture and wine. The Church of Saint Paulin was largely rebuilt between 1854 and 1856 in the Neo-Gothic style.
Local Life
Saint-Ciers-sur-Gironde has three weekly markets. The weekday markets are held on Wednesday and Friday mornings at the Place du 8 Mai.
Annual Events
The road and the Port des Callonges mark the southern boundary of the Marais de Saint-Simon. Wooden carrelets, small fishing huts built on stilts, stand along the shore. The port is located on the Gironde estuary, where fishing boats and pleasure craft moor. Kayak trips are organised in summer, and the port also has a pontoon for passenger boats. The Fête du port is held there on 14 July, and the Nuit des Carrelets on 15 August.
