History
The fortified enclosure of Rions was classified as a Monument historique under the 1862 list. It follows an elongated polygonal layout and measures 330 metres in length and 170 metres in width. The Porte du Lhyan gate has remained completely intact to this day. The town walls surrounding Rions were built in the 14th century.
The Church of Saint-Seurin preserves a Romanesque chancel with an apse flanked by two apsidioles and a bell gable above it. The merchant's house opposite the Church of Saint-Seurin houses a museum and the Association de Sauvegarde de Rions. The Halle aux petits pois is an 18th-century market hall with ashlar construction, broad arcades and a traditional wooden roof.
Landscape and Trails
Rions is situated on a terrace overlooking the Garonne River. The Boucle des coteaux is a 6.2-kilometre hiking route that leads to the top of the hill. From there, the view extends over the rooftops of the villages, the meanders of the Garonne and the horizon of the Landes.
The Citadelle is a square tower from the 14th century that overlooks the former port of Rions and the plain.
Local History and Wine
Peas were the area's horticultural speciality at the time and were sold in the Halle aux petits pois. Château Réaut offers a visit to the fermentation cellar and the barrel and amphora cellar, followed by a tasting of four wines.
Further Activities
Robins Trails is aimed at children aged 6 to 12 who are accompanied by their families and takes them through the medieval village of Rions with puzzles and tasks.
Château Réaut offers a 3-kilometre hike with Bulle Verte.
