Mourens: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Mourens is a rural village shaped predominantly by winegrowing, with more than 600 hectares of vineyards. Anyone planning a stay in Mourens may wish to rent a holiday apartment.

Culture

The Church of Saint-Martin was built in the first half of the 12th century and fortified in the 16th century during the Wars of Religion. It has a wall bell tower, which is considered relatively rare in the region.

The Saint-Pierre Chapel in Montpezat is a small Romanesque building. Its stone porch provided shelter for pilgrims on the Way of St. James. Another distinctive feature of the local architectural history is the Moulin Gaucher windmill, which was known for its unusual ability to turn backwards. The Peyrines windmill is badly damaged.

History

Under the Ancien Régime, Mourens belonged to the Seigneurie de Benauge. On 11 February 1857, Napoleon III signed the decree annexing Montpezat to Mourens.

Nature and Surroundings

Numerous hiking trails can be explored from Mourens or in the surrounding area. In Arbis, 7 km from Mourens, lies the Château du Haut Benauge, a medieval fortress. It is listed in the heritage register and is open for guided tours.

The motorway can be reached from Mourens in 15 minutes.

Wine

Château Peyrines produces red, rosé and white wines, including a dry Entre-deux-Mers white wine. Château Chatagnau offers tastings of all its products in Mourens.
