Montagne: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Montagne brings together historical evidence from several centuries. The Church of Saint-Georges was built in the 11th century on older Roman ruins, while the underground shelters of Malengin date from the 6th century. The windmills on the Calon hill date from the 17th century and remained in operation until 1930. The Château des Tours has towers dating from the 14th century as well as a chapel outside the enclosure; the ruins of the Château de Malengin date from the 12th century.
Culture and History
The millstone-processing site of Malengin also dates from the 12th century. The Church of Notre Dame de Parsac and the Church of Saint-Martin in Montagne date from the same period. Notre Dame de Parsac is considered the smallest church in the municipality of Montagne. The Château Saint-Georges was rebuilt in the 18th century. The Moulins de Calon comprise five windmills, including two restored mills with canvas-covered sails.
The desire to rent a holiday apartment in Montagne is an accommodation decision in its own right.
Winegrowing
In the center of Montagne, the Maison des Vins welcomes visitors year-round to discover the wines of its producers. The Montagne-Saint-Émilion Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée was established by a decree dated November 14, 1936. It covers wine-growing landscapes consisting predominantly of clay- and limestone-based hills and plateaus, as well as 1,600 hectares of vineyards. The wines of Montagne-Saint-Émilion are exclusively red wines.
Trails and Sightseeing
The Fontmurée washhouse has a picnic area. The 4 km loop through the Bois de Bonde is an educational trail for interpreting the wine-growing landscape, designed and maintained by the Ecomusée du Libournais. The 6 km family cycling loop "Montagne et Saint-Georges en famille" runs through the vineyards of Montagne-Saint-Émilion and Saint-Georges-Saint-Émilion.
A tour of the Château Saint-Georges includes the fermentation room and barrel cellar and ends with a tasting of two vintages. The Château Saint-Georges also offers a wine-themed tour of its aromatic garden. The Moulins de Calon can be visited by prior arrangement.
