Culture and history

Gardarem displays 800 tools, objects, accessories and items of clothing documenting the working lives of earlier generations. It is open year-round on Saturdays and Sundays: in winter from 4 to 6 p.m. and in summer from 5 to 7 p.m.; admission is free.

Notre-Dame de Lanton was built in the 12th century from stone from the Gard and Garluche, and extended in the 19th century. It is the only church on the Bassin d’Arcachon surrounded by its cemetery. Signage at the church explains its history.

The Gardarem Écomusée in Taussat preserves the Gascon heritage as well as the memory of the former oyster farming and pine resin extraction industries. Taussat is also home to the present-day Chapelle Saint-Louis, which was completed in 1963; its stained-glass windows were made by the Bordeaux enamel artist Mirande.

The Vieux port de Taussat was excavated by hand in 1855 and inaugurated in 1878. Villa Tamaris was completed in 1907 and is considered the first reinforced-concrete house on the Bassin d’Arcachon.

Coast and trails

The Sentier du Littoral in Lanton provides access to the Domaine de Certes. A side path called the “voie des Anglais” runs along this coastal trail.

The Plage de Suzette beach in Lanton was formerly called “La Baie des fées”. The Bassin de Baignade de Lanton bears the “Handiplage” label and provides people with reduced mobility with access, safety and the special equipment required for assistance while bathing.

Things to do

Bicycles can be rented at the Bureau d’Accueil de Lanton from April to October. During the same period, nature, discovery and educational tours are organised in Lanton, including nature walks, water excursions and activities for children.

Attelage du Bassin offers carriage rides departing from Cassy in Lanton. The service includes three carriage routes: from Cassy to the seafront promenade, the oyster huts and the port; a route in Taussat to the beach via the old port and the village; and a route through the pine forest to Lac de Mouchon.
