Circular Routes and Nature

The signposted circular hiking trail «Randonnée – boucle Cabanac» includes a main loop of 11 km and a small loop of 7 km. It begins at the former railway station of Cabanac and leads to the municipality’s most important historical sites. Along the route, heritage information boards provide details about several historical anecdotes of the municipality.

The 26 km-long green route «La Brède–Hostens» runs through pine forest and several protected natural areas. Along the way, visitors can discover the Graves wine-growing region, the Landes girondines forest, and the Gât-Mort in Cabanac-et-Villagrains.

Culture and History

Saint Martin de Cabanac features Romanesque architectural elements at the rear, as well as a remarkable Stations of the Cross and magnificent stained-glass windows. Saint Jean de Villagrains was rebuilt in 1879 in the present-day village of Villagrains; a bell dating from 1544 has been preserved there.

The defensive complex of the motte-and-bailey castles consists of two truncated cone-shaped earth mounds, a square platform, a bailey, and an associated system of ditches. The motte-and-bailey castles of Cabanac-et-Villagrains are considered a particularly well-preserved example of earth fortifications in Aquitaine. The western, second motte’s ditch contains the Fontaine des Fées, whose name refers to popular beliefs and folklore.
