Blaye: Vacation Rentals and Holiday Homes

The Citadelle de Blaye and the Verrou de l’estuaire have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites since July 7, 2008.

Culture

The Verrou Vauban at the mouth of the Gironde consists of three fortifications: the Citadelle de Blaye, Fort Pâté, and Fort Médoc. At the Musée d’Archéologie et d’Histoire de Blaye, this history is presented within a distinctive building context: the museum is located in a former civilian and military prison that was converted into a bakery at the beginning of the 19th century.

The Musée d’Archéologie et d’Histoire illustrates 7,000 years of the citadel’s history. On display are archaeological finds, a model of the medieval castle, plans showing the development of the fortress, and collections on everyday life and the bakery. The Centre d’Interprétation de l’Estuaire de la Gironde covers navigation-related professions, typical boats of the Gironde estuary, and associated activities such as fishing and hunting. The fauna and flora of the estuary, as well as its development over the centuries, are also explored.

The Château Marquis de Vauban is a 600-meter walk from the Citadelle de Blaye and offers a guided tour of the vineyards and wine cellars, followed by a tasting of three red AOC wines from Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux.

Nature

The one-hour cruise on the Gironde estuary departs from the nautical landing stage on Rue Pierre Sémard, at the foot of the citadel in Blaye’s town center. It offers views of Fort Pâté and Fort Médoc and provides insights into the estuary’s unique natural environment.

Things to Do

During the guided tour of the Citadelle de Blaye through the underground passages, the defensive system established by Vauban is explained. The tour leads through underground passageways that served soldiers in defending against possible attacks and covers approximately 1.2 kilometers and around one hundred steps.

The “Mystères de la Citadelle” Explor Game is an outdoor digital treasure hunt in the Citadelle de Blaye. It takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Getting Around

The “Balade à roulettes: Ville de Blaye” begins at the Porte Royale. There is a parking lot in front of the entrance to the citadel.
