Culture
The present-day grounds of the Commanderie d’Arveyres include a four-hectare wooded natural area, the former fortified house, once a Templar building, and the remains of a wine cellar. The medieval garden is laid out with four sections in the shape of a Maltese cross; plants are displayed there according to the Capitulary of De Villis from 812.
The Church of Notre-Dame, built on a hill, replaced the former church in 1842. From there, you can see almost the entire municipality and the Dordogne Valley, as well as Libourne.
The Commanderie d’Arveyres offered tours and an exhibition every second Saturday through October. The tour of the Bel Air Eiffel wine estate at Château Fage presents a vineyard estate associated with the Eiffel and Glotin families and includes a tasting of two of the estate’s wines.
Nature
In this section, the Dordogne is home to pike, pike-perch, perch and white fish such as carp, bream, bleak, glass eels and roach, as well as migratory species such as eel, lamprey and shad.
The section of the Dordogne from Arveyres to Castillon-la-Bataille is influenced by the tides. The tidal range is about 4.50 metres, and the tides that occur twice a day contribute to diverse and species-rich river ecosystems.
Geographical Location
The 505-kilometre A89 motorway connects Bordeaux with Lyon via Clermont-Ferrand, runs through Arveyres for several kilometres and is almost entirely tolled. The Arveyres toll plaza is at Exit 10.
The Port du Noyer district is located in Arveyres opposite Libourne. The Dordogne can be accessed at two points in Arveyres: at Port d’Arveyres and Port Laroque. The Jeanne d’Albret pontoon was built with an accessibility ramp, a paved area equipped with benches, and parking spaces that are freely and free of charge accessible.
