Isle-Saint-Georges: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Isle-Saint-Georges lies on the left bank of the Garonne. The Saucats flows through the village, while the church interior is illuminated by 21 stained-glass windows; most bear the signature of stained-glass artist Joseph Villiet.

Water and paths

The village port of Isle-Saint-Georges still accommodates a few boats below the lock. The former port of Isle-Saint-Georges is now a nautical stop. The lock next to the Pont du moulin opens and closes with the tides and can occasionally create a foaming cascade.

On the Garonne, recreational fishing using carrelet fishing nets is practised from riverside pontoons. A riverside footpath along the Garonne leads towards the hamlets of Boutric and le Rabey. The “Balade d'Isle-Saint-Georges–Ayguemortes-les-Graves” walking route is an 8 km circular trail.

Nature

The “Bocage humide de Cadaujac et Saint-Médard-d'Eyrans” Natura 2000 site includes Isle-Saint-Georges. The site contains semi-natural wet meadows.

Culture

The Gallo-Roman remains in Isle-Saint-Georges include a hypocaust. Villa Verdelet was built at the end of the 19th century for a Bordeaux wine merchant. It has an octagonal tower with battlements and decorative machicolations, as well as a square tower with a pointed roof. It is decorated with sculptures of barrels and grapes, along with high-relief sculptures of Joan of Arc and Saint George slaying the dragon.

The village centre of Isle-Saint-Georges has been a registered protected site since 22 March 1978 and covers 52.7 hectares. The still-visible stone arch of the Pont du moulin has been preserved. At the exit of Isle-Saint-Georges on the road to Ayguemorte, a wrought-iron mission cross stands beside the dyke on the Estey. The church of Isle-Saint-Georges contains a three-masted ex-voto that is registered as a protected historic object.

Wine

The winegrowers of Isle-Saint-Georges produce red wine with the Bordeaux Supérieur AOC designation.
