A mill has stood at the site of the Säimen Mill since 1880. The present building dates from 1937 and operated until 1960. In 1978, the Savonranta Association rented the mill complex from the municipality to use it as a museum. The Säimen Mill is classified as a regionally significant cultural heritage site. Its location, building and later use as a museum can thus be viewed as distinct chapters in the history of the mill.

The local history exhibitions include objects related to timber rafting, forestry and household work. The museum also displays most of the wooden mill machinery, as well as tools used in mill work. The grounds include a smoke sauna, a forge with tools and a stable building. Exhibits there show horses and their uses, as well as crafts and agriculture. The Säimen River, which flows beside the mill, provided power for the mill and the electricity-generating generator. Together, these details trace the story from the technical work at the site to aspects of local everyday life.

Forest Trails and Lakeside Sections

The Timon Taival nature trail passes through varied forest landscapes and by rock formations. There is a well-equipped barbecue shelter along the trail, suitable for grilling sausages. The Timon Taival trail runs through rocky terrain with some short climbs and steep steps, and is not suitable for people with reduced mobility. In places, the route is difficult to make out; blue spray-painted marks and ribbons indicate the way. Conditions can be more challenging when wet.

The trail starts at the end of Koivulantie. If you walk it in the opposite direction, you can leave your car at the Säimen Mill Museum. Check access and parking information again before travelling.

The Niemen Kierto nature trail is approximately three kilometres long. It passes through uneven, root-filled terrain and follows the shore of Kangasjärvi for an extended stretch. This trail is also unsuitable for people with reduced mobility; orange trail markers indicate the route. If conditions change, check the markings on site. The choice of trail offers a clear contrast in scenery: Timon Taival features forest and rock formations, while Niemen Kierto includes a longer lakeside section.
