In Lemi, you can discover history, regional cuisine and nature in a variety of ways. A guided tour visits historic sites, the village centre has a local history museum with an open-air collection of historic buildings, and Särä is the area’s traditional speciality. The municipality also offers nature trails, rock paintings and horse-riding activities. When looking for a holiday apartment, consider which of these interests you would like to shape your vacation most.

Village History and Regional Traditions

The Itsenäisyyden polku is a guided tour introducing visitors to historic sites in Lemi. The focus is on local history. In the centre of Lemi village, the Lemi Local Heritage Society runs a small local history museum and an open-air collection of historic buildings. The museum building originally dates from 1882 and is considered an outstanding example of regional vernacular architecture. You can therefore visit historic sites as part of the tour and see a specific building whose history dates back to the 19th century.

The local cuisine also offers a distinctive way to experience Lemi: Särä is a traditional speciality made with lamb and potatoes, slow-cooked in an oven for nine hours. The combination is described as meltingly tender; the long cooking time is one of its distinguishing features. The Lemi Local Heritage Society also offers a bookable evening featuring a traditional smoke sauna followed by Lemin Särä. Details and prices are available on request. If this experience suits your travel plans, factor in the booking and ask for details directly.

Nature Destinations and Trails in the Municipality

One specific destination is the Tuulimyllyn nature trail. Its starting point is at Salmentie 15 in Lemi; the trail leads to the Huttula windmill, which has stood on a rocky hill since 1853. The nature and hiking trails maintained by the Municipality of Lemi pass through varied landscapes and terrain. Some trails have springs, shelters and a bird tower along the way. The municipal trail network also includes routes suitable for families and cyclists.

Other nature and history sites are located elsewhere in the municipality. The Ruominkapia rock painting is near Kivijärvi. At least the upper group of images was created in the Stone Age. Some of the paintings can be seen from a small rock platform, while others are on a rock face that slopes steeply down to the water. In the village of Saira, Isokivi stands in a field: a boulder of Rapakivi granite about seven metres high. The rock paintings and the boulder offer quite different points of interest: prehistoric traces on a rock face in one place, and a striking individual block of granite in another.

More Activities and Choosing the Right Location

In Iitiä, Ratsuniemen talli runs a riding school and offers trail rides and equine-assisted therapy. Lessons take place in small groups of three to four riders, and each riding lesson lasts 60 minutes. This information can help you plan around the activity’s duration and group size. Nature trails, guided local history tours, archaeological traces and horse-riding activities offer different focuses; no single outing needs to combine them all.

When choosing your holiday apartment, take the location of each attraction into account: the museum is in the centre of Lemi village, while the riding school, windmill and boulder are associated with Iitiä, Huttula and Saira. This lets you choose your location based on whether you are most interested in the village centre, regional cuisine, nature trails or other destinations in the municipality.
