Luumäki: Fortress History and Lake Scenery
Accommodation in Luumäki
The municipality of Luumäki combines fortress history, lake scenery and routes on foot and on the water. When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to ask which experiences you want to shape your stay: Taavetti is known for its fortress and museum, Kotkaniemi for a historic villa on Kivijärvi, and other destinations for hiking, cycling or paddling.
Taavetti Fortress and Local History
Taavetti Fortress is a bastion fortress dating from the late 18th century and represents the earliest phase of fortification in Luumäki. An itinerary with information boards invites you to explore the site independently. The Fortress and Local History Museum is located in the fortress near the citadel, the best-preserved part of the complex. You can find it at Linnalantie 35, 54500 Taavetti. The collections introduce the history of the fortress and Luumäki and include material on prehistory, a radio exhibition, a school museum and other local topics.
An exhibition at the museum also presents the imagery of the rock paintings and the region’s prehistory. Ten rock paintings have been found in Luumäki—more than in the area of any other municipality. The natural sites are difficult to access and often hard to spot. If you are interested in the paintings, the museum offers another way to explore the subject. Signs to the fortress are located off Highway 6 and the Hamina–Savitaipale road. Parking and access to the inner fortress are west of the town hall. Guided tours are offered in summer, along with events and sing-alongs. The best-known events include Vallijamit and Marttilan kylän markkinat. Check the current dates before your visit.
Kotkaniemi and Trails by Kivijärvi
Kotkaniemi was the home of President P. E. Svinhufvud and Ellen Svinhufvud. Built in the late 19th century, the villa is influenced by Art Nouveau and has been restored. It presents the Svinhufvuds’ lives and the history of Finland’s independence period. The main building stands on a pine-covered peninsula beside clear Kivijärvi. The nature trail on the museum grounds is an approximately 600-metre loop around the narrow peninsula, surrounded by the lake. Side paths lead to the Svinhufvud shooting monument, the boat landing and a lakeside rock with a view of Kivijärvi. The trail is accessible outside museum opening hours; check the current regulations before your visit. It is not maintained in winter.
Another nature trail option is Pärsäniemi on Kivijärvi. From the Tyynilahti car park, an approximately 500-metre accessible path leads to the lean-to shelter. There is also a 1.5-kilometre forest trail around Pärsäniemi. The two routes offer a practical guide for planning your day: one leads to the shelter, while the other loops around the area.
Hiking, Cycling and the Salpa Line
The Huopaisenvirta Trail starts at Luumäki Town Hall in Taavetti and runs eight kilometres to Huopaisenvirta, where there is a bridge and a lean-to shelter. Along the way, you’ll find a natural forest section and an anti-tank trench obstacle that forms part of the main defensive line of the Salpa Line. Two attractions along the Itsenäisyentie Route are also located on this hiking trail. The Itsenäisyentie attractions form an approximately 45-kilometre cycling route west and north of Taavetti.
The Salpa-asema site also has trails, signposts and information boards, and is considered easy to explore. There are 33 fortifications in total between Kivijärvi and Suur-Urpalanjärvi. The Salpa-asema exhibition site features several different types of fortification. Other Salpa Line structures are located on islands in Kivijärvi. In Suo-Anttila is Lusikkovuoren luola, the largest of the Salpa Line caves, with three entrances. Concerts and public events have also been held there.
Church Hill and Water Routes
Luumäki Church Hill is home to a wooden cruciform church and a bell tower on the edge of a small square. The Luumäki parish and parish district were established here in 1642, when Luumäki separated from the municipality of Lappee. The road to Church Hill begins south of Rantsilanmäki at a junction off Highway 6; the hill is about 2.5 kilometres away.
Kivijärvi is also part of the history of the Finnish forest industry: the Väliväylä log-floating route ran from Rutola in Lappee through Luumäki and Valkeala to the Kymijoki River. It was in use for about 70 years, until the early 1960s. Today, a paddling route offers a different perspective on the lake scenery. It crosses clear, island-dotted Kivijärvi and continues through Huopaisenvirta to Kannuskoski and then into the neighbouring municipality. The Huopaisenvirta, Haukkasaari and Uitonsaari rest stops have lean-to shelters and landing places for paddlers.
Whether you want to pair your holiday rental with fortress and museum visits, short nature trails or longer hiking, cycling and water trips will shape the focus of your travel plans. The routes mentioned differ considerably in length and type: from the approximately 600-metre loop at Kotkaniemi and the trails at Pärsäniemi to the eight-kilometre Huopaisenvirta Trail and the approximately 45-kilometre cycling route. Use these differences to choose a base for your stay according to the experiences that interest you most.
