Discover Niedermauern: Chapels, the Isel and Special Trails

Niedermauern can be explored through a variety of different attractions: historic chapels, an unusual legend, trails along the Isel and destinations for active or contemplative days away. Chapels and stories from Niedermauern

A prominent cultural landmark is the Chapel of St Apollonia in Niedermauern. It was built in 1783. The village chapel of St John Nepomuk also stands in Niedermauern-Gries. It was rebuilt from the ground up in 1818. A different form of local tradition can be found at the Pest-Kötterle. There is a copied depiction of the legend in which a ram fights the Grim Reaper, defeats him and thereby drives death out of the valley. On this route, you turn towards Niedermauern in the municipality of Virgen, after which the cycle tour runs directly along the Isel. Another option is the toboggan run at the Würfelehütte. It bears the Tyrolean provincial quality seal for natural toboggan runs. The Würfelehütte itself is an alpine farm and snack station. This allows you to take different priorities into account when planning: you can devote a day to cycling, put a toboggan run on your itinerary or consider stopping for refreshments as a separate part of your outing. The specific choice depends on whether you would rather be on the move or combine an excursion with a break.

Pilgrimage trail and guidance for finding accommodation

The “Hoch und Heilig” alpine pilgrimage trail also passes through the surrounding area. At Gries, it crosses the Isel and then continues to Obermauern and the pilgrimage church of Maria Schnee, the destination of this stage. For your travel planning, this opens up a different way of experiencing the landscape: the focus is not on speed or sporting activity, but on the course of a trail and the religious destinations along the stage.

As an additional point of orientation, the Habererhof campsite is located in the Niedermauern district of Virgen, around a 5- to 10-minute walk from the Iseltrail.
