Hiking between the valley, Dorfertal and Großglockner

The valley circular trail is 19.5 km long and takes around six hours. Individual stages or shortcuts are possible, allowing you to adapt the route to your daily schedule. The Glocknerkrone also provides clear orientation for multi-day hikes: it is completed in five daily stages over approximately 60 km. Each stage can be accessed and left at different points, which means that the stages can also be used as day hikes.

Kals is one of the National Park municipalities where hikers can descend after completing an individual stage of the Glockner Circuit. Another option is the hike into Dorfertal. It begins at Hotel Tauerwirt and follows the stream through the Dabaklamm gorge to the Kalser Tauernhaus, making it suitable as a family hike. The Dorfertal History Trail adds audio trees with audio stories from dairy farmers, mountain farmers, mountain guides, mountain hut hosts and other knowledgeable people from Kals about life in the valley.

During the summer months, Dorfertal can be reached by the National Park hiking bus. The hiking bus connection operated by Postbus route 952 runs to Lucknerhaus. This information can be helpful when choosing your accommodation and dividing up your excursion days.

Nature experiences and accessible trails

Dorfertal in Hohe Tauern National Park features a diverse landscape with waterfalls, gravel plains, marshes, larch forests, flower-rich meadows, glaciers, lakes and alpine wildlife. Culture, crafts and alpine activities

The Ködnitz Cultural Trail is a historical circular walk through the village centre of Ködnitz in the centre of Kals. Local history also includes St. George's Church, the oldest church in Kals, which was also built as a fortified church, as well as the ruins of St. Peter's Church. This place of worship dates from the 16th century and was built by members of the Görz dynasty. The Glockner Exhibition at the Kalser Glocknerhaus is designed as an interactive experience exhibition.

At the Kalser Stockmühlen mills, miller Johann demonstrates how grain is turned into flour. The climbing garden has 32 climbing routes and five multi-pitch routes with difficulty ratings from 3+ to 8-. The climbing park is accessible in summer from the Lucknerhaus car park. Those who regard the Großglockner itself as an alpine destination can climb it from the Ködnitztal valley via the Lucknerhütte and Stüdlhütte, and then continue via the Erzherzog-Johann-Hütte or the Stüdlgrat ridge.
