Individual buildings also make the town’s development tangible. St. Andrew’s Parish Church at the foot of Lebenberg is a late Gothic building dating from 1506 and combines art from seven centuries. The Church of Our Lady on Kirchenhügel was built in the 14th century and can be recognized by its distinctive tower. The Powder Tower is a two-storey masonry building with a steep gabled roof. It was built around 1500 to store powder for Sinwell mining. Kitzbühel Capuchin Monastery was established between 1698 and 1702.

The Hinterobernau Farmhouse Museum is located in a farm dating from 1559, built in the Salzburg-Tyrolian style. The farm is furnished as it was 100 years ago and shows rural life before tourism arrived in the Kitzbühel region. Guided tours through historic Kitzbühel also convey the town’s development from its medieval roots to its status as an Alpine sports city. The Kitzbühel Music Lovers bring chamber music of international quality to Kitzbühel; since 1978, their summer concerts have stood for musical excellence and cultural commitment.

Mountains, Trails and Shared Experiences

To switch between the town and the mountains, Hornbahn I together with the Horngipfelbahn takes you to the Horn summit, where you can enjoy a 360° panorama. Kitzbühel is one of Tyrol’s most diverse hiking regions; more than 1,000 kilometres of well-signposted hiking trails lead through a cultural landscape that combines activity and enjoyment. On the Hahnenkamm, the Hahnenkammbahn connects Kitzbühel’s historic town centre directly with a 233-kilometre ski area. In summer, the Streif Experience on the Hahnenkamm adds a family trail with nine stations offering climbing, balancing and small adventures. This allows families to plan a day with different interests without having to separate culture and nature.

Schwarzsee also has its own distinctive character: parts of its shoreline are designated nature reserves.
