Saray combines a mosque in the town centre with diverse surroundings that include coastal forest, a canyon, caves and recreational areas. These places offer different reasons to stay: architecture and history define the town, while the coast, forest, water, caves and regional cuisine offer other experiences.

Mosque, Courtyard and Local History

Ayaz Paşa Cami, also called Ayas Paşa Camii, stands in the town centre and forms a small complex of buildings together with a medrese and a hamam. The mosque is a small, domed building made of hewn stone; its minaret has just one balcony. This simple description highlights specific architectural features: the dome, the stone and the minaret’s distinctive form.

Several Crimean khans who died in exile are buried in the courtyard of Ayaz Paşa Cami: II. Devlet Giray Han (died 1725), II. Fetih Giray Han (died 1746), İslam Giray Sultan (died 1742), Arslan Giray Han (died 1767), III. Selim Giray Han (died 1785), IV. Devlet Giray Han (died 1780) and Şahbaz Giray Han (died 1792). The names and dates of death give the site a concrete historical dimension; alongside the architecture, the history of the rulers buried in the courtyard is also a central focus here.

Coastal Forest, Canyon and Caves

Nearby is Çamlıkoy Nature Park, a 45.1-hectare forested area on the coast in Saray District. It has a beach suitable for summer tourism as well as areas designed for day use. The Kanara Canyon near Galata Stream is predominantly home to oaks, hornbeams and wild cornelian cherries. Thus, the surrounding area features both coastal scenery and the wooded slopes of a canyon as distinct natural attractions.

The Güngörmez Caves in Kanara Canyon are approximately 40 metres long. In recent years, the canyon has often been visited by camping and adventure tourism enthusiasts. Güneşkaya lies two kilometres west of the centre of Saray District and includes caves and historical remains. These places add archaeological traces and striking landforms to the picture of Saray, while remaining distinct from the town centre.

Water and Places to Spend the Day

In Çamlıkoy Nature Park, a two-kilometre stretch of Bahçedere allows boat trips from the sea.

The Laladere picnic area in Güngörmez lies 13 kilometres from the district centre and is an excursion destination near Saray. It is designed for all-day use and covers a large area with wooden tables and chairs as well as seating areas. The site also includes a children’s park, football and volleyball courts, and food service facilities.

Regional Cuisine and Cultural Events

After a hike around the Güngörmez Caves, visitors can take a break in the gardens of local producers and sample regional specialities. The mushrooms of Saray’s forests also shape local cuisine: after the autumn rains, wild mushrooms grow there, known as bear’s head mushrooms, Çörek mushrooms, boletes or porcini. Residents gather the mushrooms and offer them for sale.

Collected boletes are also sold at stalls in a village square and are exported mainly to Italy, France and Spain, as well as other European countries. Saray Municipality’s Culture, Art and Peace Festival is held as a tradition. The 2026 edition was the 16th traditional and 9th international edition and took place from 24 to 30 August in front of the Atatürk Cultural Centre. If a festival influences your travel dates, it is worth checking the dates for the edition you want to attend.

Choose the Right Location for Your Trip

When looking for a holiday apartment in Saray, a simple comparison can help: the mosque and small building complex focus on local history, while the coastal forest, canyon, caves, picnic areas and regional tastings take you into the area around the destination. This makes it easy to distinguish the town centre from nearby excursion destinations as different points of interest.
