Vineyards in a rural setting, expansive views stretching to the islands and traces from different eras give İğdebağları Village a distinctive character. There is also a café among the vineyards and a village history connected with the Syrian Yörüks.

Vineyard landscapes and views from the terrace

The vineyards of Chateau Kalpak lie in the rural surroundings of İğdebağları in Şarköy district. They extend along a forested slope, about 300 metres above sea level. The slopes face south-southwest, and the soil is gravelly and calcareous. The vineyards are also exposed to winds from the Sea of Marmara and the Gulf of Saros. The vineyard landscape can be a focus of your trip planning.

The grape harvest is also tied to the elevation: it is pushed back to October. When choosing your travel dates, you can take this into account as a seasonal aspect of viticulture. The vineyards of Ch. Kalpak can be visited by appointment. Tasting events can also be arranged for Ch. Kalpak. Kafe Kalpak is located among the vineyards of Ch. Kalpak and serves wine accompaniments on its terrace. From the terrace, the 270-degree view stretches from the Greek island of Samothrace to the islands of the Sea of Marmara.

Archaeological traces at Sufunya Kalesi

Another way to explore the area's history is to visit Sufunya Kalesi. The site is situated on a hill in the valley where Maymun Deresi and Sufunya Deresi meet. Sections of the walls are still visible in places along the western and eastern fortifications. A surface survey uncovered numerous ceramic and amphora fragments. They are dated to the period from the 3rd century BC to the 2nd century AD.

Older finds also contribute to the area's historical picture: bronze objects from the early period around 1200 BC were found in the area of İğdebağları known as Kozmanderesi. Sufunya Kalesi was registered as a first-degree archaeological site by decision no. 2137 on 16 January 2015. The finds, visible sections of the walls and the hilltop location offer different points of interest for anyone interested in archaeology and the area's long history.

Village history and art

The village of Araplı, also known as İğdebağları, was founded by Syrian Yörüks. Another cultural connection to the rural surroundings is the international art festival held in recent years by the boutique winery Şato Kalpak Bağları. It brings together nature, vineyards and art. The area's history thus encompasses not only archaeological evidence, but also cultural activities that bring viticulture and art together.

These interests offer various reasons to discover İğdebağları Village, without having to limit your plans to a single activity.
