Yenişehir: Architectural History and Regional Festivals
Accommodation in Yenişehir
Yenişehir combines a layered architectural history with regional festivals and destinations for excursions in nearby Yarhisar. This gives you different options when planning your trip: you can explore historic buildings in Yenişehir, plan your trip around a festival, or include activities in the surrounding area.
Ottoman architectural history and decorative details
Kumluk Camii, also known as Süleymanpaşa, is associated with a local tradition: it is said to be where the founding sermon of the Ottoman state was delivered and its statehood proclaimed. The Şemaki Evi Museum is a two-storey house thought to have been built by the Şemaki family in the 18th century. The family came to Anatolia from Shamakhi in Iran and settled in Yenişehir. The house and its decorations date from different centuries: the 19th-century painted ornamentation features plant motifs and landscapes.
Another notable complex is the Sinanpaşa Külliyesi. It comprises a mosque, a caravanserai to its north and an imaret; remains of a building interpreted as an arasta are located to the east. The complex was built in the second half of the 16th century to support pilgrims at one of the starting points of the Bursa pilgrimage route. İznik tiles from the 16th century and original painted ornamentation add to its architectural character. The complex brings together a range of decorative elements and an architectural history also connected with pilgrimage at the time.
Other buildings reflect a variety of historical connections. Voyvoda Camii, also called Çınarlı Camii, was built in the 14th century; Ulu Camii was built by Orhan Bey. Postinpuş Baba Zaviye dates from the reign of Murad I. Saray Hamamı is considered a surviving remnant of a palace built by Osman Gazi. Çifte Hamam was built by Hüseyin Paşa of Yenişehir in 1645. Those interested in Ottoman history will therefore find buildings from different periods, with different dates and attributions, rather than just one historical era.
The clock tower has its own chronology: construction began in mid-1932 and took three and a half years. It was completed and opened in late 1935 or early 1936. The tower has two bells and is used as the emblem of Yenişehir Municipality.
Festivals, regional products and workshops
The regularly held International Altın Biber Festival includes competitions featuring regional specialities and presentations of regional products. The 2022 edition also featured tasting events. The Tarihi Yenişehir Panayırı is held regularly on Fetih Caddesi. Its format includes market stalls, regional products, clothing and souvenir areas, and amusements with fairground rides. While the festival focuses on regional specialities and products, the Panayır offers a broader mix of market stalls and rides. Event dates vary; check them if you want to plan your trip around one of the festivals.
The municipality’s programme at the Sinanpaşa Külliyesi ranges from workshops in handicrafts, sewing, embroidery and woodworking to robotics programming, 3D printing and maker activities. The programmes on offer may change. Alongside the historic buildings, the local programme therefore also covers crafts and technology.
Excursions in the surrounding area and getting there
