Archaeological Traces and Building History

Höyücek lies 1.5 kilometres west of Bostancı. The archaeological site includes a large settlement from the Archaic and Classical periods, as well as damaged remains from the Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age. Pottery finds from the Hellenistic and Roman periods have also been identified. The different periods make Höyücek an interesting point of reference for anyone who does not want to limit archaeological history to a single era.

The Gönen Mosaic Museum is located next to the Gönen thermal baths in the municipality of Gönen. On display are a floor mosaic and collected stone artefacts from the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods. The collection therefore spans several eras that are also reflected in the historical connections around Bostancı.

A local account dated 27 December 2008 records that Bostancı Mosque was reinforced after damage caused by the 1956 and 1964 earthquakes, and mentions a dome inside. The same account says that the village park was named after Halil İbrahim Kocaaktaş, who lost his life during the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation. The mosque and park thus connect specific aspects of the area’s building and local history.

Village Life and Historic Festival Days

Camel wrestling took place in Bostancı’s village pasture. The last competition reported there was held in 1981 or 1982. On 28 May 2013, a traditional village festival day (Hayır) with a Kutlu-Doğum Mevlid was held in Bostancı; the report at the time described the event as annual. These specific historical dates give the traditions a clear timeframe.

A local account from 2008 lists keşkek as one of the village’s wedding dishes. This associates the dish with a festive occasion in the local food culture and adds a culinary tradition to the history of festival days and competitions.

Weather, Connections and Choosing a Location

Bostancı lies in a climatic transition zone between Mediterranean and Black Sea conditions. Summers are hot, while winters are mild and rainy. This means trip planning involves contrasting weather patterns: hot summers and milder, yet rainy, winters. Which season suits your plans depends on which of these conditions you prefer.

A 20-kilometre route begins on the Gönen–Bandırma road, passes through the rural settlements of Alaettin, Bostancı, Körpeağaç and Havutça, and connects them to the Bursa–Çanakkale road. Reports on improvement works along the route appeared in April 2025. Koca Bridge spans the Gönen River and connects Bostancı with the Gönen Plain. It was probably built in the 1960s.

The route and bridge give Bostancı a clearly described rural character. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can first consider whether this character and the local history suit your travel plans. The archaeological traces at Höyücek and the cultural points of interest in Gönen offer further topics to consider when choosing your destination.
