Discover Gömeç: Coast, Olives and History
Accommodation in Gömeç
Gömeç combines long sandy beaches and olive cultivation with distinctive traces of history. The district brings together a variety of things to discover: the Blue Flag sea, a hill inhabited since the Early Bronze Age, mosques of historical significance, and the landscape of the Madra Mountains. You can choose between coast, culture and nature for your trip, rather than seeing Gömeç only as a seaside resort.
Coast, Hill and Traces of an Ancient Settlement
The beaches in Gömeç district are wide and long, and the sea has been awarded the Blue Flag. Kızçiftliği Hill offers a different view of the coast: it lies on the coast, north of Gömeç’s settlement centre. Its history stretches far back, as the hill has been continuously inhabited since the Early Bronze Age. The coastal landscape and early settlement history thus offer two different perspectives on the district.
The historical description of Gömeç village adds another element to this picture: the village lay three kilometres inland from the coast, on the road between Ayvalık and Burhaniye.
Mosques and Cemeteries
Among the historical buildings is the mosque in Gömeç-Yayaköy. Fatih Sultan Mehmet had it built as one of two mosques following the same design, and gave both the name Hacı Bayramı Veli Camii. The mosque in Gömeç’s Yaya Mahallesi district is also one of the mosques built to this design and bearing this name. Almost 20 gravestones from the 18th and 19th centuries stand in the cemetery area of the Yaya Mahallesi mosque. Their number and the two centuries give the site a tangible historical character.
Three cemeteries are located in the Gömeç district on the road between Ayvalık and Burhaniye. When entering Gömeç from Ayvalık, they are on the left-hand side of the road, with about 500 metres between them. This information may be useful when exploring the historical sites along the road.
Olives Shape Agriculture
Olives are the most important agricultural product in Gömeç district. There are 1,250,000 olive trees across 11,150 hectares. The olives are processed as table olives, while most are turned into olive oil at twelve active olive oil factories. Olive cultivation is therefore not just a single product, but a defining part of the region’s agriculture. If you are interested in food and local produce, this offers a distinct way to experience Gömeç’s character.
The Madra Mountains and Special Natural Sites
Trekking to Atatürk Kayaları in the district’s Madra Mountains is offered as an alternative tourism activity. The Koca Çınar plane tree also stands near Atatürk Kayaları, in the vicinity of Gömeç. Its age is estimated locally at about 850 years.
Another distinctive feature of the district is the Derman Thermal Spring in Kuyualan Mahallesi, also known as Uyuz Kaplıcası. Its water, which is 31°C, collects in two spring pools and two bathing pools. The pools and water temperature describe the facility; they are another feature of the local landscape alongside the coast and mountains.
Culture and Events
The Nuri Bozyel Cultural Centre in Gömeç hosts cultural and artistic events. After extensive renovation, it reopened as a versatile conference hall. The district also hosted the 5th International North Aegean Sculpture Symposium. The Türkiye Windsurf League is also held in Gömeç.
When choosing a holiday rental, you can first consider whether the coast, cultural history, olive farming or activities in the Madra Mountains will shape your stay. Gömeç offers a range of thematic points of interest across the district.
