Family holidays in the mountains
Find accommodation
Mountain holidays offer walks, views, lakes, farms and winter activities, but the right choice depends on altitude, gradients, weather, accommodation and the ability of everyone travelling. Compare the base and the planned excursions with the youngest and least experienced member of the group.

Choose valley, village or higher location
A valley town may offer shorter routes to shops, a doctor, public transport or a bathing lake. A mountain village can provide direct access to paths, but may require a steep or winding drive. Check parking, gradients, snow clearance and the actual journey time rather than relying on the name of the resort.
Compare different types of destination, such as South Tyrol or Lake Garda, according to the family’s goals. A known region is not automatically suitable if daily routes are too long or demanding.
Plan activities for different ages
Families do not need to complete one long summit route together. Short circuits, themed trails, playgrounds, mountain railways and lakes can provide alternatives. The hiking-holiday guide helps compare distance, elevation, surface and the possibility of turning back.
Check current weather, path closures and local advice before each excursion. The German Alpine Club provides general mountain-safety information; local warnings and rescue guidance take priority.
Make the accommodation work
After a day outside, a drying area, washing machine, heating, covered entrance and a kitchen are practical. Check stairs, bedroom locations, safe outdoor space, cot and high chair. For several generations, retreats and bathroom access can be as important as the view.
Summer, autumn and winter
Summer requires shade, drinking water and a plan for thunderstorms. Autumn paths may be wet and some mountain railways may operate seasonally. In winter, check snow clearance, winter tyres, heating, drying facilities and the distance to lifts or trails. The winter-arrival guide covers additional questions.
For a ski holiday in a holiday home, compare the return route in poor visibility as well as the distance to the lift or trail.
