Gunpo offers a variety of reasons to spend time outdoors and explore regional history. The area of Gunpo-si includes ecological parks, lakeside paths and cultural sites; Surisan also extends into parts of Anyang and Ansan. When planning your trip, you can choose how to balance nature experiences, walks and historical discoveries.

Parkland and nature

Chomakgol Ecological Park combines Surisan’s natural surroundings with cultural heritage from the Joseon period. It is connected to Surisan Provincial Park and Cheoljjuk Park, and forms an important ecological green corridor in Gunpo-si. Chomak Dongcheon, the park’s landmark, recreates Byeongpung Rock and Kal Rock, two rocks symbolic of Surisan. At the Ecology Exhibition Center, activity programs and play facilities introduce topics related to nature, animals and plants; program availability may vary.

The park’s habitats are also part of its ecological character. An April 2021 tourism article describes a restored wetland as a habitat for the endangered narrow-mouthed frog and identifies the species as a protected flagship species there. The Surisan Wildflower Garden showcases restored wildflowers native to the Surisan area.

Surisan extends across parts of Anyang, Ansan and Gunpo-si. It was designated a provincial park on July 16, 2009. The mountain therefore reaches beyond municipal boundaries and can be distinguished from Gunpo’s individual park attractions.

Paths and learning destinations for different day plans

The Banwol Lake Loop Trail is 3.4 kilometers long and connects Surisan with Daeya Lake. Information on three courses offers another way to plan: Course 6, the Galchi Lake Trail, is about 5.8 kilometers, with an estimated walking time of 1 hour 30 minutes. Course 7, the Angol Trail, is about 4 kilometers and takes an estimated 1 hour 10 minutes. Course 8, the Banwol Lake Trail, covers about 8 kilometers, with an estimated walking time of 2 hours 30 minutes. The approximate distances and times can help you compare how long a walk may take, without drawing conclusions about its difficulty.

Another highlight is the Nuri Observatory at Daeya Library, which is operated by the city of Gunpo. The rooftop garden features an astronomical observation room and a planetarium; the fourth floor houses an astronomy and space experience center as well as a 4D theater. As a municipal learning destination, the observatory focuses on astronomy and space. As operating details may change, check them before planning a visit.

Cultural history and seasonal experiences

The old house of the Park family in Dundae-dong was the residence of Park Yong-deok. In the 1930s, he led rural education initiatives in the Gunpo area. The house was designated local cultural heritage by Gunpo-si on November 27, 2019. A much earlier period of history is represented by the Joseon white porcelain kiln site, considered an important regional kiln heritage site dating from the late 15th to the early 16th century.

The Gunpo Azalea Festival is a seasonal spring flower festival held in the Azalea Hill and Azalea Park area. The program includes performances, hands-on activities and food; residents and visitors can take part together. If you would like to include the festival in your trip, check the dates for your planned visit.

When choosing a holiday rental in Gunpo, let the experiences you prefer guide your decision: are you planning to spend time on the designated walking routes, especially interested in the ecological parkland, or hoping to include historical sites and the seasonal festival?
