The Santuario Nacional de Nuestra Señora de Coromoto safeguards the image of the Virgen de Coromoto. The tradition associated with the site also shapes the sanctuary’s religious significance: this is where the Virgen is said to have appeared to the Indigenous man Coromoto for the second time. The Locainas of Portuguesa are another facet of the region’s culture. At a festival performance in 2024, around 150 Locainas welcomed Minister Villegas with dance, music and drums. They wore their characteristic colourful costumes. The Locainas are considered an expression of the state’s cultural identity, and their tradition has existed for more than 200 years. The festival performance is a specific example of this tradition, while its long history illustrates the cultural context that reaches further back.

Colonial-Era Architecture in Guanare

Casacoima adds a historic building in Guanare to the picture. The building dates from the colonial period and was declared National Architectural Heritage in 1977. The designation gives Casacoima a different focus from the religious heritage of the Santuario: here, the focus is a historic building, while there it is the religious tradition surrounding the Virgen de Coromoto.
